The Virginia Eye Institute Foundation
Changing the Landscape of Global Eye Care
The Virginia Eye Institute Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization committed to expanding access to life-changing vision care for patients in need. Founded by the doctors and partners of Virginia Eye Institute, the Foundation began as a physician- and partner-supported effort and is now growing into a broader, community-driven mission supported by donors, volunteers, and partners who believe in the power of sight.
The expansion of support has enabled the VEI Foundation to broaden its scope of services and locations while continuing to focus on the core mission. The doctors of VEI continue to donate their time, money, and expertise but are no longer the sole source of support for the life-changing work being done.
Local Impact
In Virginia, the Foundation collaborates closely with various local organizations to ensure that individuals needing vision care have access to some of the region’s best providers and state-of-the-art facilities. We assist with charitable cataract surgeries, costly specialized contact lens, as well as other services which profoundly impact the lives of those who would not be able to afford this care otherwise.
Global Strategy: A phased Approach to Sustainable Vision Care
Internationally, the Foundation implements a strategic, multi-phased approach designed to build lasting community expertise in areas with minimal existing vision care infrastructure.
Phase 1: Direct Care and Relationship Building
The process begins with the Foundation deploying medical teams, supplies, and equipment to countries with defined needs, performing essential procedures that are otherwise unavailable. These initial outreach trips are crucial for building critical local relationships and identifying local providers suitable for advanced training.
Phase 2: Focused Training and Expertise Transfer
Once established in a community, the mission shifts from solely performing care to intensive, focused training of local providers and support staff. This empowerment phase builds the necessary expertise within the community, reducing reliance on outside intervention.
Phase 3: Long Term Support and Self-Sufficiency
The final stage is achieved when local medical teams are fully capable of providing independent care. The Foundation’s role transitions to a sustainable support model, providing necessary supplies, equipment, and ongoing education as needed. This successful model allows the Foundation to redirect its providers’ generously donated time to new communities where their impact will be greatest.
WHY THIS MATTERS
By supporting the VEI foundation, you are not only helping to restore sight. You are helping to restore hope for the future.
The Foundation proudly highlights the recent achievement of this final, self-sufficiency stage with St. Vincent and the Grenadines, a testament to the long-term impact of its sustainable care model.
